Hi, I’m YJ Cho.

I’m a physical therapist who believes that every person is unique and equipped with untapped potential to grow and change. Your age, injury history or medical diagnosis should not define the limits of who you are or keep you from living the lifestyle that you enjoy. I’m a curious and passionate movement expert, enthusiastic about optimizing the human body through a blend of science, evidence and clinical experience.

I combine my ability to observe your posture and movement patterns, feel the quality of movement at each body part, and facilitate efficient movement through manual therapy and movement training to integrate your body as a whole to create lasting changes. Over the course of our time together, we will problem-solve your pain, eliminate any confusion, and create a resilient body for years to come. This framework keeps you feeling your best so you can enjoy doing the things that you love. And best of all, you can start to take control of your body and health. No more leaving it up to chance or waiting for things to happen.

My early years:

I was a high-spirited child, who was immersed in sports from an early age. I was either playing sports, watching sports, or dreaming of sports. I had a knack for movement as I would spend hours analyzing my favorite players and practicing their “moves”, whether it was Ken Griffrey Jr’s baseball swing, Ronaldinho’s soccer dribbling, or Allen Iverson’s basketball crossovers. I ran a whole lot as well, competing in Track & Field in high school. Movement has always been a big part of my life.

A truck ran me over.

An abrupt transition, but let’s get to the point...
I had two significant moments in my life where my ability to move and live as I wanted to was taken away from me. 

First time was when I was just 9 years old. I got hit and run over by a 4x4 truck crossing a local intersection in New Jersey. It happened to be on Mother’s Day and I was crossing the street with my older sister to buy my mom a Mother’s Day card. I still remember seeing my mom’s crying but smiling face when she walked into the emergency room and saw me for the first time lying in bed with a bunch of tubes attached to me.

During the accident, I was first hit, then the front wheel of the truck ran over my abdomen and the back wheel dragged me along a couple of feet as the truck was trying to stop. It’s a miracle that I’m still alive today. Along with a tire mark that was literally imprinted on my abdomen, I tore my bladder and fractured a few vertebrae in my lower back. I lost the function of my legs and the doctors thought I may never have use of my legs again. However, this prognosis started to change in the first few weeks of my stay in the hospital. I started regaining sensation and motor function in my legs. I had to learn how to walk and use my legs all over again. Physical therapy was a big part of this process.

I eventually recovered and became the active boy that I was before the accident. I loved every sport growing up, but I couldn’t get enough of basketball. I still can't. However, I would literally sprain my ankle every other day. I didn’t know any better. I would roll around in pain, get back up and hobble around and do it all over again. 

I couldn’t play my favorite sport; I was miserable.

However, this one injury in my 5th year of PT school, I knew it was different and this was the second time movement was taken away from me. I barely walked home that day. I was writhing in pain and it was just not getting better. I would try to pop 3-4 Advils and try to play basketball. I barely lasted 5 minutes and I just couldn't play.

As a result of this one injury, I went from playing basketball every day - sometimes twice a day - to not being able to run or have any impact on my leg for over 2 years. I didn’t even think physical therapy was an option. And I WAS IN PT SCHOOL. I thought I had a serious injury, I thought I needed to take some medication, try some injections, and eventually had arthroscopic surgery from a recommendation of a surgeon at NYU Langone. I rehabbed it with traditional physical therapy for 8 weeks and I was in more pain. I was miserable; I felt like a part of my identity was taken away from me.

But during this time, I was in an advanced orthopedic class and we were going over some manual therapy techniques for the foot and ankle. So I went up to my professor after class and asked him if he could look at my ankle and booked an appointment with him at his clinic. After about 4-6 sessions of him working directly with me, I was able to play a full game of half-court basketball for the first time in over a year. I was in pain afterward but this little bit of hope that he gave me was an important moment in my life. I knew my ankle could get better.

My Journey Here

Along with what I needed to do for my ankle, I started asking myself what I needed to study and where I needed to go, to be able to develop the skills necessary to provide quality treatment to my patients.

From this moment on, for the next 7-8 years of my life, I have traveled from NYC to Chicago to California to Northern Virginia and now back to NYC for clinicals, residencies, and a fellowship program. I have been all over the country immersing myself in some of the most powerful approaches to physical therapy out there: best thing about it, I have been getting treated myself, through my experiences. And I got better. I am back to playing basketball, really often as my life allows at this point. I am here to share my journey with you so that you can start yours today.

Thanks to my background and training, I have a unique set of skills that allows me to work with all different types of patients. Acute pain, chronic pain, neurological, and performance-based.

I understand and resonate with the concerns of where you are because I know how frustrating it is to feel stuck in your body and lose the freedom to move at will. Even worse, it’s concerning to not know why things are not improving. Which is why I specialize in helping people like you overcome pain and injury, and get you back to your favorite activities, especially when other treatments have failed or plateaued.
